Epistle: Acts 12: 1-11
Gospel: Mt. 16: 13-19

Mon 30 Commemoration of Saint Paul * Apostle, No Latin Mass

Wed 2 Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Thu 3 Saint Irenaeus, Bishop & Martyr
Fri Sacred Heart of Jesus

Mass on Friday, July 4 will be followed by adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and benediction.

The Magisterium of the Church, in the First Vatican Council, defined the doctrine of the primacy of Peter and his successors in these terms:

“We teach and declare, therefore, according to the testimony of the Gospel that the primacy of jurisdiction over the whole Church was immediately and directly promised to and conferred upon the blessed Apostle Peter by Christ the Lord. For Simon, Christ had said, 'You shall be called Cephas' (Jn 1:42). Then, after Simon had acknowledged Christ with the confession, 'You are the Christ, the Son of the living God' (Mt 16:16), it was to Simon alone that the solemn words were spoken by the Lord: 'Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jona. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the powers of hell shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and what you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven' (Mt 16: 17-19).”

We are bound to believe that Christ Himself gave to Peter the authority of Prince of the Apostles as the visible head over the whole Church militant. Whoever succeeds Peter in this Chair holds Peter's primacy over the whole Church according to the plan of Christ Himself!

The Blessed Sacrament offers us intimate union with Jesus Christ. Our becoming one with Christ is fostered by the grace we receive through all the sacraments, but especially through the sacrament of the Eucharist. In the Eucharist we receive not just grace, but the very Author of grace. We receive the very Body and Blood of Jesus Christ! Through this reception we share in the divine life of Jesus Christ. We must communicate in a state of grace and desire to advance in His love.

Jesus Christ is our savior and our master. He taught us both by word and example. He showed us how to love God for whom we were created. He says in today's Gospel: “That the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father hath given me commandments, so do I.” Jesus also says that He came down from Heaven not to do His own will, but to do the will of His Father. If we truly love God and wish to be sanctified we must discern God's will in all things and do our very best to carry it out! Since Saint Paul tells us that the divine love is poured into our souls through the Holy Ghost, we must always beg the Holy Ghost for knowledge of God's will and the courage to carry it out. If we want to love God we must not follow our own will, but rather the will of God. We must conform our will to that of His.
