From Father Fasching:

Saint Paul says we must be prepared to struggle “against the principalities” of this world. We must contend with those angels who rebelled against God, but whom Christ has already overcome. Saint Paul reminds us that these “world rulers” who have to be striven against can only be defeated with spiritual weapons—truth, righteousness, peace and faith. We must also remember the need for constant prayer.

Satan never ceases to try and find ways to bring about man’s eternal damnation. However, we must remember that Christ has won the victory upon the Cross and Satan no longer has power over us as long as we use in our struggle against him the weapons God has given us. These include faith and a complete trust in God.

In the words of Saint John of Avila: “Since this enemy is stronger than we are, we must avail of the ‘shield of faith’, which is something supernatural, whether it be by using a word of God, or receiving the sacraments or (countering the devil with) a doctrine of the Church. We need to believe firmly with our mind that all our strength comes from God” (Audi filia, 30).

Sincerely in Christ,

Rev. Jeffery A. Fasching
