Join the Latin Mass community for a pot-luck dinner immediately following Sunday Mass on August 16th in the school cafeteria.
A plenary indulgence may be gained by visiting a church on the second day of August and reciting there an Our Father and the Creed.
Sanctifying grace and charity alone give supernatural life to the soul. St. Thomas says that while grace and charity sanctify the soul and unite it to God, these gifts are ordered for the good of others. St. Paul himself says: ...”all this without charity, is nothing.” Charity is always the most fundamental characteristic of the Christian soul. It is also the greatest gift the Holy Ghost can give us! “No man can say the Lord Jesus but by the Holy Ghost,” says St. Paul. A soul not vivified by the Holy Ghost cannot perform acts of supernatural value.
Humility is the virtue which allows us to practice charity. In the parable of the Pharisee and the publican, the Pharisee praises himself and is puffed up with pride. He cannot pray because he has no charity. Remember the words of St. James: “God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.” Jas. 4:6. The pride of the the Pharisee is his condemnation, whereas the attitude of the publican is completely different. He is a poor man who knows he has sinned. In humility he trusts in God's mercy: “O God, be merciful to me, a sinner.” God loves to pardon the humble! St. Augustine says: “God prefers humility in things that are done badly, rather than pride in those which are done well.” We are not justified by our virtues and good works, but by grace and charity!

We must have confidence in the merciful love of Jesus Christ. “Rejoice with Me for I have found the sheep that was lost.” This is the story of the love Jesus Christ has for all mankind and especially for every individual soul. The good shepherd and the Sacred Heart of Jesus are both concrete expressions of the merciful love of Jesus and they urge us to go to Him with complete confidence!
The Heart of Jesus is thrilled with joy when we humbly acknowledge our faults to Him and implore forgiveness! We must ask Jesus Christ to help us penetrate the secrets of His infinite, merciful love!

A plenary indulgence is granted to those who take part in the prayers and devotions held in honor of Divine Mercy, or who, in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament exposed or in the tabernacle, recite the Our Father and the Creed, adding a devout prayer to the Merciful Lord Jesus (e.g., “Merciful Jesus, I trust in You!”).
If unable to get to church for the above, one may gain the same indulgence by reciting the Our Father and the Creed before a devout image of Our Merciful Lord Jesus Christ and, in addition, praying a devout invocation to the Merciful Lord Jesus (e.g., “Merciful Jesus, I trust in You!”).
Mercy is of the very essence of the redemptive incarnation of the priesthood of Jesus Christ. By its very nature, His priesthood is a work of mercy based on the covenant of mercy that God made with man. Christ brought God's gift of mercy to man, bringing forgiveness of sin by the Sacrifice of His own Body and Blood---a new and eternal covenant of God's merciful love.
We should be able to see the relationship between the Gospel and Divine Mercy. Listen to the words of Pope Benedict XVI from his Regina Caeli message on Divine Mercy Sunday in 2008: “Indeed mercy is the central nucleus of the Gospel message; it is the very name of God, the Face with which he revealed Himself in the Old Covenant and fully in Jesus Christ, the incarnation of creative and redemptive Love. May this merciful love also shine on the face of the Church and show itself through the sacraments, in particular that of Penance, and in works of charity, both communitarian and individual. May all that the Church says and does manifest the mercy God feels for man, and therefore for us…From Divine Mercy, which brings peace to hearts, genuine peace flows into the world, peace between different peoples, cultures and religions.”

Is a retreat designed to help men discern God's call to the diocesan priesthood. To be called by God to serve Him as a priest means to have one's soul stirred deep within. Throughout a weekend of prayer, discussion and group interaction, men begin to better understand God's movement in their life. Exploring priesthood weekends are held at Mundelein Seminary.
Discernment Retreat for College age men—April 24-26, 2015 at Meinrad Seminary in Indiana.
Encounter with God's call—April 18-20, 2015 at Conception Seminary College--for young men 16 and under who are considering a vocation to the priesthood.

The second Sunday in Passionide, or Palm Sunday, commemorates the last triumph of our Lord Jesus Christ on earth. It marks the beginning of Holy Week. “Let the faithful be invited to take part in the Procession of Palms in greater numbers, thus rendering Christ the King public witness of their love and gratitude.”
On Palm Sunday the Church celebrates the triumphant entry of Our Lord into Jerusalem. The crowds went before and after Jesus Christ with branches cut from trees thrown before Him. They shouted “Hosanna to the Son of David. Blessed is He that cometh in the name of the Lord.”
We commemorate this triumph by blessing palms and carrying them in solemn procession. Although this triumph ultimately led to the death of Jesus, we know for certain that His Passion and Death is how he conquered the world, sin, and Satan! “If I be lifted up...I will draw all things to Myself.” Jn. 12:32.

Mass on September 5th will be followed by adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and benediction.
In addition to serving as celebrant for Mass in the Extraordinary Form (Latin) here at Saint Agnes Cathedral in Springfield, Fr. Fasching continues to serve as chaplain to the non-Catholic hospitals in the Springfield area. These include Cox South, Cox North, Cox Walnut Lawn, Ozarks Community Hospital, and Select Specialty Hospital.
Fr. Fasching also assists Father Paul Wightman, O.M.I., with his parishes including Immaculate Heart of Mary, Mansfield; Sacred Heart, Mountain Grove; Saint Leo the Great, Ava; Saint William, Gainesville; and Saint Michael, Cabool.
As you know, there is no scheduled Latin Mass during the week on Mondays. This is Father Fasching's day off. You are asked not to attempt to contact him on this day.
God's greatest commandment is to love Him with one's whole heart and mind. We are then commanded to love our neighbor as ourselves. God delights in those who hope in Him and trust in His mercy. He calls us to show the same mercy towards our brethren. Acts of mercy and charity trump any formal act of prayer or devotion. We can never be too busy to assist a neighbor in need. We must always remember that when we serve our neighbor out of kindness, we serve God Himself! The quicker we respond to the needy and the more joyful our disposition, the more pleasing our act will be to God.

Pope John Paul II wrote the following in his encyclical Dives in Misericordia: “The Church of our time…must become more particularly and profoundly conscious of the need to bear witness in her whole mission to God’s mercy, following in the footsteps of the tradition of the Old and the New Covenant, and above all of Jesus Christ Himself and His apostles…the Church must consider it one of her principal duties at every state of history and especially in our modern age to proclaim and to introduce in life the mystery of mercy, supremely revealed in Jesus Christ.”
We should be able to see the relationship between the Gospel and Divine Mercy. Listen to the words of Pope Benedict XVI from his Regina Caeli message on Divine Mercy Sunday in 2008: “Indeed mercy is the central nucleus of the Gospel message; it is the very name of God, the Face with which he revealed Himself in the Old Covenant and fully in Jesus Christ, the incarnation of creative and redemptive Love. May this merciful love also shine on the face of the Church and show itself through the sacraments, in particular that of Penance, and in works of charity, both communitarian and individual. May all that the Church says and does manifest the mercy God feels for man, and therefore for us…From Divine Mercy, which brings peace to hearts, genuine peace flows into the world, peace between different peoples, cultures and religions.”

Christ’s victory on the cross is a victory over sin and Satan. On the Day of Judgment this victory will be seen clearly. We must therefore be vigilant! “He ascended into heaven whence He will come again to judge the living and the dead, each according to his merits. Those who have responded to the love and compassion of God will go into eternal life. Those who have refused them to the end will be consigned to the fire that is never extinguished.”

Wealth and power were often considered signs of God’s benevolence toward His people in Old Testament times. They were the reward for a good conscience and an upright life. In contrast, like Job, if one suffered it was believed that that person was sinful and was being punished by God.
However, in the New Testament, it is the poor and dispossessed who take priority. The weak, orphans and those who have contrite hearts are the ones that find favor with God. In and through Jesus Christ God forgives sinners of all kinds, from the prodigal son to the publican to the Samaritan. God condemns the religious leaders who cling more to their own self-righteousness than to mercy and love.
In the Blessed Virgin Mary we see the fact that God chose a member of Israel’s race to bring us His Savior. Nowhere else is God’s mercy shown more abundantly! Divine Mercy made His home in the womb of the Virgin and she became His temple. Mary’s Magnificat is the song of God’s mercy!

The Wedding Feast at Cana in Galilee is the second luminous mystery of the Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Jesus Christ works His first public miracle because his Mother asks Him to! When we ponder this mystery in the life of Christ we should realize how it pleases God when we approach Him through His Blessed Mother. Mary is the most powerful intercessor of all the saints. In fact, one single sigh to her Son is more powerful than the prayers of all the angels and saints combined! Mary’s prayer is the prayer of a Mother, whereas the prayers of saints and angels are prayers of servants. All that the Mother asks of the Son is granted to her.
Mary has a heart full of love and mercy for poor sinners. She desires to see us happy in this life. We have only to turn to her if we want to be heard. It is true that God loved us so much that He died for us, but in the heart of Our Lord there is also justice for sinners. In the heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary there is nothing but mercy. When Jesus Christ is ready to punish a sinner, Mary intercedes and begs pardon for the sinner and Jesus cannot refuse her anything! The Most Holy Virgin places herself between her Son and us. The greater we sin, the more tenderness and compassion she feels for us.
Let us renew our devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and approach God through her with all our needs.

When we petition our Lord in prayer, amendment and contrition must always be at the top of the list.
This Advent let us mortify ourselves. We now have a wonderful opportunity to do penance for our sins and display our sincere love for Jesus Christ as we anticipate His return.

Christ offered Himself upon the Cross because He willed it. No one took His life from Him. He laid it down freely. Christ offered His life for the sins of the world. By the will of His Father, weariness, fear and sadness broke His heart. Christ was a lonely stranger upon the earth. He was without true friends in the midst of a perverse, sensual and ungrateful people! Imagine how He must have longed for heaven and His Father’s house.
Christ watched in terror as the heartless executioners mocked Him, abused Him and spit in His face. He watched the hypocritical Pharisees ridicule Him on the road to Calvary. Saint Leo the Great tells us that:
“True reverence for the Lord’s passion means fixing the eyes of our heart on Jesus crucified and recognizing in Him our own humanity. The earth-our earthly nature-should tremble at the suffering of its Redeemer. The rocks-the hearts of unbelievers-should burst asunder. The dead, imprisoned in the tombs of their mortality, should come forth, the massive stones now ripped apart. Foreshadowing’s of the future resurrection should appear in the holy city, the Church of God: what is to happen to our bodies should now take place in our hearts.
No one, however weak, is denied a share in the victory of the Cross. No one is beyond the help of the prayer of Christ. His prayer brought benefit to the multitude that raged against Him. How much more does it bring to those who turn to Him in repentance.”

Springfield area Catholic pro-life supporters have organized the Springfield, MO Life Runners chapter, associated with the National Life Runners Team. Life Runners is an organization encouraging Catholics to support respect for all life from conception through natural death, through prayer, witness, and walking/running. We want to invite all area pro-life Catholics to join Life Runners, and to join in our upcoming events, including:
• Fun Run/Walk at Phelps Grove Park at 8am on April 21 with National Life Runners director Dr. Patrick Castle.
• Walk and Time of Prayers and Witness at Cowden Park across from Planned Parenthood on May 12 from 10am-Noon.
The Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Medical Mile and 5K on June 2 at Meyer Center by Cox South Hospital.

May 1, 2011, Divine Mercy Sunday; A plenary indulgence is granted to those who take part in the prayers and devotions held in honor of Divine Mercy, or who, in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament exposed or in the tabernacle, recite one Our Father and the Creed, adding a devout prayer to the merciful Lord Jesus. Those who for a just cause cannot get to church can gain the same indulgence by reciting one Our Father, the Creed, and a devout prayer to the merciful Lord Jesus before an image of the Divine Mercy.
Immediately following Mass on May 1st the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed and we will join together in reciting the Divine Mercy Chaplet with benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.
The Church has always understood and has defined that Jesus Christ in today's Gospel conferred on the Apostles authority to forgive sins. This power is exercised in the Sacrament of Penance. The Sacrament of Penance is the most sublime expression of God's love and mercy towards men. The Lord is always waiting for us to repent. He will always forgive us and restore to us our dignity.
The Popes have consistently recommended Christians to have regular recourse to the Sacrament of Penance. Penance helps us to grow in a true knowledge of ourselves and in Christian humility. We root out bad habits and keep from neglecting our spiritual life through penance. Our conscience is strengthened and purified through the Sacrament of Penance.
