There will be no Latin Mass from Thursday, September 20th through Wednesday, September 26th, with the exception of Sunday, September 23rd. The Celebrant for the Sunday Mass on the 23rd will be Father William Hogdson.

When the Lord spoke to Moses on Mt. Sinai, Moses asked that he might see the divine glory. The Lord responded: “I will make all my beauty pass before you…but my face you cannot see, for no man sees me and still lives…” (Ex 33. 18-23). The infinite God, the God of ineffable glory, is so far above all creatures, that the human creature, by its natural powers, can never behold Him as He is. In the New Testament, the Epistle of Blessed Saint Paul to Timothy reiterates this teaching: “(God) is King of kings and Lord of lords. He alone possesses immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light. No one has ever seen or ever can see Him. To Him be honor and might forever! Amen” (1 Tim 6.15f). John 1.18 speaks in the same vain.

Yet Jesus promises, “Blest are the single-hearted, for they shall see God” (Mt 5.8); and Paul, in enumerating the gifts that God bestows upon His beloved, speaks of the immediate vision of God as His ultimate gift: “Now we see indistinctly, as in a (dark) mirror; then we shall see face to face. My knowledge is imperfect now; then I shall know even as I am known” (1 Cor 13.12).

John tells us that we cannot imagine what God has in store for us who are His children, but this we know, that we shall see Him as He is: “Dearly beloved, we are God’s children now; what we shall later be has not yet come to light. We know that when it comes to light we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is” (1 Jn 3.2). Notice that John says, “We shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.” It is because we are made like God, sharing in His divine nature (cf. 2 Pet 1.4), that we shall be able to see God as He sees Himself!

Announcement: Father Jeffery Fasching Appointed To Latin Mass

OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: As of Sunday May 9th 2010, Father Jeffrey Fasching was appointed by Bishop James V. Johnston to be the celebrant of the Traditional Latin Mass (Extraordinary Form) at St. Agnes Cathedral in Springfield Missouri. The mass schedule will continue as before with confessions prior to mass. Father Fasching's appointment is perpetual.

Low Mass This Sunday

The Extraordinary Form will be offered as usual at 2:30 PM at St. Agnes Cathedral, but will be a Low Mass. For those who have never attended a Low Mass before, there is less singing, incense is not used, and the texts of the Mass itself is not sung. Properly understood, the Low Mass is very edifying and offers a wall-to-wall meditative environment, contra-pop culture.

A few notes:

During the reading of the Introit, the "Amen" is not spoken by the people, in keeping with the rest of the Introit, which is read by the priest alone.

The "Laus tibi Christe" is not said until Father kisses the missal.

It is imperative that the servers lead in the responses and the congregation follow. This will allow for a smooth recitation of the responses, instead of the regretable situation in some places where the servers follow the responses of the people and chaos ensues.

Unlike at daily Mass in the Extraordinary Form, the people do not join in the responses for the prayers at the foot of the altar, nor do they join the servers for the response during the Offertory. They are however, invited and encouraged to make all other responses that the servers make throughout the Holy Mass.

The Re-Conquest of the West Through Music

The Holy Father has a passion for music. He has called more than once for a re-taking of the West through the Sacred Liturgy. An integral part of this plan then, must necessarily include music. The music especially suited to the venerable Roman Liturgy is Gregorian Chant. Unfortunately, since the Second Vatican Council, Gregorian Chant has seen a great decline in the Ozarks. It is with great joy then that I announce initial steps to reclaim the territory lost by greatly expanding the use of Gregorian Chant at the Extraordinary Form Mass at the Cathedral in Springfield. At present, Mass VIII is the current "chant setting" which is ordinarily used for Holy Mass. Working with the choir much over the next few weeks, I hope to make Masses II, IV, IX, XI and XVI and the Requiem Mass a regular part of the Liturgy at St. Agnes. Included in this push for more chant will also be Credo I and a reappearance of Credo V that we saw for Father Orthel's first High Mass as well as many obscure and all but forgotten chant pieces. This will take sometime, but with the grace of God will be in full swing by January of next year. On the blog I will begin to post some different chants of the Masses so that the faithful may raise their voices to God with the schola and choir. Mass XI and IX will soon be heard, and God willing and Mary interceding will then become a regular part of the chants known by the community.

High Masses

The latest developments have High Masses at St. Agnes resuming not the first Sunday in June, as initially reported, but rather the second Sunday in June with Father Orthel's first High Mass on the External Solemnity of Corpus Christi. There is still plenty of time to secure this date on your friends calendars. Invite everyone!

Altar Server Practice

With High Masses beginning in the month of June, the servers need to get together a reasonable amount of times between now and then to make sure that everyone is on the same page. Please email me if Saturday will be a problem for you. The time will be announced soon.

MAJOR Liturgical Announcement

Beginning Sunday June 7th, the normative form for the offering of the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite at St. Agnes on Sunday's and Holy Day's (and a few other days here and there!!) will be a "sung" High Mass. Father Orthel's first "sung" High Mass will be Sunday June 14th. It will be followed by a procession with the Blessed Sacrament through the streets of Springfield. Details on the procession are still being worked out. If you have been sitting on the fence about attending the Extraordinary Form, June 14th is the time to make the trip to St. Agnes at 3 PM.

Ascension Thursday

Father Bill Hodgson, pastor of St. Ann's located at 1156 Grand Ave Carthage, MO, has announced that on Ascension Thursday the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite will be offered at 7 PM.

The Cathedral schedule for the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite on Ascension Thursday has yet to be announced.

Beginning the third Sunday in March, Holy Mass according to the Extraordinary Form will be moved from its 7 PM timespot to 3 PM at St. Agnes Cathedral. Please mark your calanders and do all that you can to join us at this new time. When we began at Holy Trinity at 2 PM our numbers showed much promise, lets get back on track!

Diocesan Priest Attends Sacred Music Workshop

Fr. Joseph Orthel attended the ‘Midwest Gregorian Chant Workshop’ sponsored by the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas at the Benedictine College in Atchison, Ks. The objective of three day workshop was to learn to sing sacred music of the Catholic Church at Mass. Andrew Mills, from New York City, a member of ‘Church Music Association of America’; and choir director at St. Agnes across from Grand Central Station in New York City, was the chantmaster and clinician for the Gregorian chant portion of the workshop. The workshop was advertised for people beginning an interest in Gregorian chant, but the experience level of the participants included choir directors with PhD degrees in music. As the group progressed in learning, a chanted Novus Ordo High Mass was offered daily. At the conclusion of the workshop on Saturday, Fr. Orthel was called into service as a priest to say the anticipatory Mass for the group. Fr. Orthel admitted his limited experience in the musical field but provided the group with a very spiritually moving, entirely chanted Mass to bring the workshop to a close. Lucas Tappan, from the St. Lawrence Catholic Center in Lawrence, Ks taught polyphony to the group. Polyphony is another form of sacred music in the Church.

Cancellations In Springfield

ATTENTION: Latin mass community in the Springfield area. The week day mass on Thursday (July 10) and Friday (July 11) will be canceled just for this week only. Father Orthel is needed elsewhere on these dates. Week day mass will resume as normal on Tuesday (July 15) through Friday (July 18) with Father Orthel presiding. A sung high mass will be celebrated at the normal time on Sunday (July 20) with Monsignor Orf presiding.

SPRINGFIELD GETS FULL TRADITIONAL RITE !!!

Springfield Missouri will now be the home of Traditional Catholicism in the Ozarks. His Excellency, Bishop James Vann Johnston, has transferred Father Joseph Orthel from Stockton to St. Agnes Cathedral in Springfield effective July 1st, 2008. Once there, Father Orthel will celebrate the Traditional Latin mass during the week and on ALL Sundays.

Fr. Joseph Orthel will celebrate the extraordinary form of the Latin rite at St. Agnes Cathedral in Springfield beginning Tuesday July 1. The new schedule at St. Agnes will be each Sunday, Mass at 7:00 P.M. with confessions from 6:00 - 6:45, weekday Mass starting at 12:15 P.M on Tue-Fri with confessions from 11:30 - 12:00. There will not be a Latin Mass in Stockton after Sunday June 15 as Fr. Orthel will be on vacation moving to Springfield to accept his new assignment at the Cathedral. The extraordinary form of the Latin Mass scheduled on the second Sunday of each month at Holy Trinity Church will be transferred to the Cathedral with Monsignor Raymond Orf as the celebrant.
