There will be a Potluck dinner Sunday, September 9th immediately following the 2:30pm Mass in the Saint Agnes school cafeteria. All are invited.

The best reasons for praying the Holy Rosary are the following:

1) For world peace… “Say the Rosary every day to obtain peace for the world.” (Our Lady of Fatima, 1917). The Popes have highly recommended the Rosary to promote peace throughout the world.

2) A means for preserving the home…”There is no surer means of calling down God’s blessings upon the family…than the daily recitation of the Rosary”… Pope Pius XII

3) For courage in the hardships of life …”a powerful means of renewing our courage will undoubtedly be found in the Holy Rosary”…Pope Leo XIII

4) As a ready and easy means of preserving the faith…”We have elsewhere brought it to the attention of the devout Christian that not least among the advantages of the Rosary is the ready means it puts in his hands to nurture his faith, and to keep him from ignorance of his religion and the danger of error”…Pope Leo XIII

We should pray the rosary for the intention of making sacrifices in order to save sinners and ourselves from hell. The Magisterium has always taught the reality and eternity of hell. If God is merciful and if the human person is free, and thus capable of change, why must hell be eternal? We must not imagine that the damned piteously plea for God to accept their repentance and that He refuses to do so because they failed to meet a deadline that God arbitrarily set. If they are in hell forever it is because they refuse to repent and, indeed, given their choice to be who they are, they cannot repent. They do not wish to repent because they have freely chosen to make themselves and their will, not God and His will, the absolute value of their existence. Instead of embracing the infinite goodness and richness that is God, they have elected the barrenness which is themselves apart from God. It is not God who first rejects the damned, it is they who reject God, and they continue to reject Him. If God should offer the damned all the joys of heaven as a reward for sincere repentance, they would say, “I would rather be damned than submit to you.” Their will is totally, firmly, and irrevocably fixed upon themselves and against God. Having excluded God completely from their existence, they lack the principle from which conversion could take its origin; that is, reverence and love for God and a willingness to obey Him.

Let us pray for the conversion of sinners through the Holy Rosary!

Holy Water- A Means of Spiritual Wealth

Holy water is a sacramental that remits venial sin. Because of the blessing attached to it, Holy Church strongly urges its use upon Her children, especially when dangers threaten, such as fire, storms, sickness and other calamities. Every Catholic home should have always in it a supply of holy water.

Did we realize now, as we shall realize after death, the many benefits which may be derived from holy water, we would use it far more frequently, and with greater faith and reverence.

Holy water has its great power and efficacy from the prayers of the Church which its Divine Founder always accepts with complacency.

Some more facts on holy water:

--The devil hates holy water because of its power over him. He cannot long abide in a place or near a person that is often sprinkled with this blessed water.

--Holy water, sprinkled with faith and piety, can move the Sacred Heart to bless your loved ones and protect them from all harm of soul and body. When worry and fear take possession of your heart, hasten to your holy water font, and give your dear ones the benefit of the church’s prayers.

--Only in purgatory can one understand how ardently a poor soul longs for holy water. If we desire to make a host of intercessors for ourselves, let us try to realize now some of their yearning, and never forget them at the holy water font. The holy souls nearest to Heaven may need the sprinkling of only one drop to release their pining souls.

--Because holy water is one of the Church’s sacraments, it remits venial sin. Keep your soul beautifully pure in God’s sight be making the sign of the cross carefully while saying:

“By this holy water and by the Precious Blood wash away all my sins, O Lord.”

*Father Orthel will be blessing water, oil, salt, medals, or any religious items needing to be blessed after mass on the first Sunday of every month, at our monthly potlucks.

On Slander

From rash judgments proceed mistrust, contempt for others, pride, and self-sufficiency, and numberless other pernicious results, among which stands forth prominently the sin of slander, which is a veritable pest of society. Oh, wherefore can I not take a live coal from God’s Altar, and touch the lips of men, so that their iniquity may be taken away and their sin purged, even as the Seraphim purged the lips of Isaiah. 　 He who could purge the world of slander would cleanse it from a great part of its sinfulness!

He who unjustly takes away his neighbour’s good name is guilty of sin, and is bound to make reparation, according to the nature of his evil speaking; since no man can enter into Heaven cumbered with stolen goods, and of all worldly possessions the most precious is a good name. Slander is a kind of murder; for we all have three lives—a spiritual life, which depends upon the Grace of God; a bodily life, depending on the soul; and a civil life, consisting in a good reputation. Sin deprives us of the first, death of the second, and slander of the third. But the slanderer commits three several murders with his idle tongue: he destroys his own soul and that of him who hearkens, as well as causing civil death to the object of his slander; for, as S. Bernard says, the Devil has possession both of the slanderer and of those who listen to him, of the tongue of the one, the ear of the other. And David says of slanderers, “They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent; adders’ poison is under their lips.”

Nothing is so necessary

　

Friends of the Cross, do you not flatter yourselves that you are, or desire to become, the friends of God? Well then, resolve to drink the cup that you must drink in order to become his friends: "They drank the cup of the Lord and became the friends of God." Benjamin, the beloved son of Jacob, was given the cup, while his other brothers received nothing but wheat. The beloved disciple of Christ, so dear to his Master's heart, went up to Calvary and drank of his cup. "Can you drink the cup that I am going to drink?" To desire God's glory is excellent, but to desire and pray for it without resolving to suffer all things is both foolish and extravagant: "You do not know what you are asking..." "We must experience many hardships before we enter the kingdom of heaven." To enter this kingdom you must suffer many crosses and tribulations.

Choir Blog

The Choir will also be receiving a special section on this blog, although the entire community is encouraged to view its contents. Much of the music will be for "choir only" but on occasion a congregational hymn or Mass setting will be posted.

Assumption Mass

On August 15th, St. Agnes Cathedral will have a 9 AM High Mass for the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Mass IX will be sung. This is the earliest time the Extraordinary Form has been celebrated since the liturgical reforms. Please come and show your support!

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament occurs in the Chapel now before Sunday Mass in the Extraordinary Form at the Cathedral. Come adore our Eucharistic Lord from 2-2:45 PM with us!

K of C Dinner

This Sunday after Mass, the Knights of Columbus from St. Agnes will be offering a meal after our Mass. The rate is six dollars per person and twenty dollars for a family. Please bring your appetites on Sunday and meet together with us and Father after Mass! We need a strong showing for the continued offering of events to our community.

High Masses Now the Norm

For Sunday's and Holyday's at St. Agnes according to the Extraordinary Form, congregants will be treated to a Sung Mass as the normative form for these occasions. If Father is unable to sing the parts of the Mass due to illness, a Low (recited) Mass will be offered that day. Come with your prepared voices from now on!

Also: If you do not have an email address on file with the community please submit one as soon as possible as this will become the normative means for the distribution of hymns until hymnals are purchased.

Motu Proprio

The Holy Father will soon released another Motu Proprio concerning the Traditional Latin Mass. It is rumored by Andrea Tornielli that this Motu Proprio will announce the expected absorbtion of the Pontifical Comission Ecclesia Dei into the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

Pro Multis in Hungary!

It is with utmost joy that I am able to report that as of Pentecost Sunday, all Masses said in Hungarian will have the words "for many" used in the Consecration of the wine and not the current and erroneous "for all". This is something that we hope to see soon copied all over the world. We cannot pray for this to come soon enough. DEO GRATIAS!

Wear Black!

I urge all of you to wear black today in protest of the events to take place at Notre Dame today. A simple peaceful gesture like this will go a long way in showing solidarity around the country with others who feel today's events are a tragedy.

Rumor Mill: Pope to Make Expected Appointment

The Catholic internet world is abuzz that Archbishop Malcolm Ranjith, Secretary of the Congregation for Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments will be named Archbishop of Colombo, Sri Lanka. This is wonderful news for catholics there and a terrible loss for the CDWDS. Archbishop Ranjith is another in the curia who is very sympathetic to the traditions and customs of Holy Mother Church and has his eyes zeroed in on the excess of the liturgical reform. Colombo was a See that had a Cardinal once upon a time, and that is also the "buzz", that the Holy Father in this move is looking to stack the deck further for the conclave to elect his successor.

Reform of the Reform in Springfield-Cape Girardeau Diocese!

Ft. Leonard Wood, a home to our brave soldiers, is preparing to invite in some of the Holy Fathers "Marshall Plan". Together with some traditional minded liturgists and musicians from Springfield, the Catholic Chapel there will be adding chanted Masses and other practices that have become rare in the Ordinary Form, into its parish life. Anticipated are things such as the Vidi Aquam or Asperges being sung before the Mass, a sung Prayers of the Faithful, traditional Gregorian hymns and propers, and so on (in the Ordinary Form, the possibilities are ENDLESS!). Please keep this community in your prayers, as many graces can be gained for them through this.

It is ESSENTIAL to keep in mind that this "Reform of the Reform" is equally as important as the return of the Traditional Rites of the Church. Sacrality must be restored where it was lost, and brought back in forms which were set aside. One Parish at a time.
