The good shepherd and the Sacred Heart of Jesus are both concrete expressions of the merciful love of Jesus and they urge us to go to Him with complete confidence!

The Heart of Jesus is thrilled with joy when we humbly acknowledge our faults to Him and implore forgiveness! We must ask Jesus Christ to help us penetrate the secrets of His infinite, merciful love!

The next pot luck is scheduled for Sunday, March 1st immediately following the 2:30pm Latin Mass.

On each of the Fridays of Lent, a plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful who, after Communion, recite the “Prayer Before a Crucifix.”

Praying constantly is a necessity if we want to save our souls! We must pray that God gives us light to see! In the fourth luminous mystery of the Holy Rosary we pray that we are able to see with the transforming vision of God and not our own, limited human vision. We must beg God to see the path we must walk in order to save our souls! Satan is constantly trying to deceive us.

We cannot live in a state of sin and slave of the devil and expect to attain eternal salvation. We cannot delude ourselves into thinking we have plenty of time to give ourselves to God. God does not count our years, but rather the sins of each individual. God has fixed for each of us the number of sins He will pardon, but the Day of Judgemt will come soon!

We always will be given the grace to resist temptation if we sincerely ask for it, however, satan would have us believe otherwise. Saint Paul says that God is faithful, and that He never permits us to be tempted above our strength. The more we yield to temptation, the weaker we become. When we have recourse to God He will always give us the strength necessary to resist temptation!

Death

It is natural to fear death, but we really should not. In fact, it is not at all a morbid desire to long for death with one’s whole heart and soul! Actually we should rejoice at death because death means that we are finally delivered from this present “valley of tears” and all our earthly suffering! Death delivers us from our actual sins and through death we are given the chance to enter into the heavenly Paradise for which we were born!

What is death? Job says that our life is full of miseries, infirmities, crosses, persecutions and fears. This is not a life for rest and enjoyment, but for labor and suffering! The only way we can merit heaven is by toil, labor and pain. It is true that death is the punishment of sin, but the miseries this life offers are so great that death should seem to be a relief rather than a punishment.

If we are prepared to die, death is welcomed. In our earthly life the world, evil spirits, the flesh and the passions all draw the soul to sin and eternal death. But death brings us to the possession of Jesus Christ, our true life!

Wisdom literature links the Holy Name of Jesus to oil. Oil gives light. Oil feeds fire. Oil nourishes the flesh and soothes pain. It is food and healing. Oil anoints the body. So also is the Holy Name of Jesus. Saint Ambrose says to preach it is to give light. To think of it is to feed the soul. To call on it is to win grace and unction.

The preaching of the Name of Jesus is what has made the light of faith shine so brightly throughout the world! It is in the light of the Holy Name of Jesus that God has called us into his marvelous light. Saint Paul says we were once in darkness, but now we have found the light of life!

According to Saint Paul we must now live honorably as in the daylight. The Holy Name of Jesus allows us to cast off the works of darkness and put on the armour of light. What infinite power! The Name of Christ came like lightning out of the mouth of Peter to give bodily strength to the feet of the lame man. The Name of Christ has cleared the sight of countless blind souls!

There will be a pot-luck dinner on Sunday, November 9th in the school cafeteria immediately following the 2:30pm Mass. This will include an All Saints day party.

The month of November is dedicated to the Holy Souls. On all the days from November 1 through November 8 inclusive, a plenary indulgence, applicable only to the Poor Souls, is granted to those who visit a cemetery and pray, even in only mentally, for the departed. Partial indulgences are granted to those who recite Lauds or Vespers of the Office of the Dead, and to those who recite the prayer “Requiem aeternam dona eis Domini, et lux perpetua luceat eis. Requiescant in pace” (“Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace”).

All indulgences whatsoever may be applied to the Poor Souls at any time by way of suffrage. The simple intention to offer them for the Poor Souls is sufficient.

The Mother and Mistress of all Churches throughout the world is the Church of Saint John Lateran, or the Archbasilica of the Most Holy Savior. It was consecrated in November of 324 the year of Our Lord.

Jesus Christ came to call sinners to repentance. He didn't come for the righteous, but for those who were going down the wrong path. Quite often He converted the worst sinners to become His most loyal followers. Zacheus is a great example. Zacheus was a chief publican and a tax collector. Jesus Christ changed his life through love and forgiveness.

After Zacheus met Jesus he no longer just thought about himself and how to get richer, rather he began to look for ways to give to the poor and to give back to those he cheated out of money—four times more!

Jesus said to Zacheus: “make haste and come down: for this day I must abide in thy house.” Jesus Christ changed his life as only He is able to do. Christ not only gives us life, but He also has the power to restore to us the true meaning and purpose of life.

Christ says in the Gospel: “For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost” (Lk. 19:10). Zacheus was not a good man. He was a cheat. He worked for the Roman government. He used the Roman authority to pressure people to pay their taxes. Tax collectors grew rich because they were able to keep whatever they collected over and above the normal amount.

Tax collectors were looked upon as thieves and robbers. “He was gone to be a guest with a man that was a sinner” (Lk. 19:7). Even the Pharisees did not want to eat with tax collectors because they believed it would render them unclean spiritually. People did not even go into the house of a tax collector because it was considered unclean. But Jesus did!

Jesus Christ didn't look upon Zacheus the way the crowds did. Jesus did not see him as somebody to hate, but rather as someone He had come to save. The love of Christ has a tranforming power! When we meditate on the first luminous mystery of the Holy Rosary we pray that the transforming power of God will work in our human hearts. Let us pray for this grace each day!

Saint Paul always exhorts us to give thanks to God! God has made us worthy to partake of the lot of the saints in light! What more could we ask for?! Through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ we have been delivered from satan's grasp and the power of darkness. We have so much to be grateful for because our destiny is to be with God in heaven forever. Since we have been redeemed through the Blood of Jesus Christ and received remission of all our sins we rejoice!

Life on earth is warfare. Saint Paul reminds us we are battling the power of Satan. We must be strong in the Lord who has given us the victory over the powers of hell. Our fight is not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers. With God we truly are able to resist evil in all forms!

We must turn to God who gives us victory over sin through the Precious Blood of Jesus Christ!

In addition to serving as celebrant for Mass in the Extraordinary Form (Latin) here at Saint Agnes Cathedral in Springfield, Fr. Fasching continues to serve as chaplain to the non-Catholic hospitals in the Springfield area. These include Cox South, Cox North, Cox Walnut Lawn, Ozarks Community Hospital, and Select Specialty Hospital.

Fr. Fasching also assists Father Paul Wightman, O.M.I., with his parishes including Immaculate Heart of Mary, Mansfield; Sacred Heart, Mountain Grove; Saint Leo the Great, Ava; Saint William, Gainesville; and Saint Michael, Cabool.

As you know, there is no scheduled Latin Mass during the week on Mondays. This is Father Fasching's day off. You are asked not to attempt to contact him on this day.

You shall love the Lord your God with your whole heart, soul and strength. God promises an eternal reward to those who faithfully keep His commandments. On the other hand, God threatens eternal punishment to those who do not. If we find ourselves constantly troubled in this life, it is because we fail to keep the commandments of God faithfully! God has said: “If you keep my commandments faithfully I will bless you in many ways; if, however, you transgress them, you will be cursed in everything you do.” If we wish to be truly happy in this word insofar as we can, there is no other means but that of keeping God's commandments faithfully. The minute we turn aside from God's path, both body and soul will be unhappy not only in this life, but possibly in the next life as well! Eternal happiness truly depends upon our ability to faithfully observe the commandments which God has given us. God rewards in this life those that are faithful to Him.

The Scriptures themselves show us that all those who chose to observe God's commandments were always happy. God never abandons those who do what God commands them to do. In the Book of Genesis Adam is a great example! As long as Adam observed God's law faithfully, he enjoyed a blissful state in absolutely every respect. His body, soul, mind and all his senses were directed to God alone. He even kept company with the angels of heaven! The bliss of our first parents would have remained forever had they continued faithful to their duties. But unfortunately we know that this happy state did not last long. The evil one, so jealous of such bliss, robbed them of all their possessions which they should have enjoyed for all eternity. The very second they chose to transgress God's commandments, everything went wrong with them. Troubles, cares, sickness and fear of death and punishment in the next life took the place of their former bliss. Their lives became nothing but tears and sufferings!

God always offers us His grace. However, sometimes we must exercise great effort and sacrifice in order to receive it and benefit from it. Think of all the people who put strenuous effort into making money and amassing riches. Think about how so many people strive for earthly honors and rewards with all their might. We must exercise the same zeal when it comes to the salvation of our souls. If we put all our effort into striving for holiness, there is absolutely nothing we cannot accomplish!

Saint Paul emphasizes the power of the Spirit we have received making us sons of God. We must nourish the gift of God in His Spirit through our prayer and good works. If we make this our first priority, God will bless us abundantly!

Mass on June 22nd (the External Solemnity of Corpus Christi) will begin at 1:30pm.

If we wish to be saved we must follow the will of God in all things. What must we do to save our souls and become saints? Sanctity consists in the perfect fulfillment of the will of God. We must conquer our self-will and follow the will of God. How do we know what God’s will is for us? Jesus Christ says: “He that heareth you, heareth me.” Saint Frances de Sales firmly believed that the most effective way of finding the will of God is by humble obedience to one’s confessor. When we act according to the advice of our confessor we always please God. This is the most secure way of doing the will of God. We should never fear anything we do out of obedience to our confessor because it is they who must render an account to God and not you! We must all obey our prelates and be subject to them.

God’s love for the human soul is shown most clearly in Jesus Christ who redeemed us from sin and Hell. Christ purchased our souls with the price of His own blood! We must therefore realize the infinite value of the soul. We must never do the slightest thing that might give scandal to our brothers. If we do then we sin against our Redeemer!

Mass in the Extraordinary Form on Christmas day will be at 2:30pm at Saint Agnes Cathedral.

Midnight Mass will be offered in the Extraordinary Form at 12:00pm midnight on New Year’s Eve at Saint Agnes Cathedral. This is the Octave Day of Christmas and a Holy Day of Obligation in the United States.

A plenary indulgence may be gained by publicly saying or singing the Te Deum in thanksgiving on the last day of the year (December 31). A plenary indulgence may also be gained by publicly saying or singing the Veni Creator Spiritus on the first day of the year (January 1).

Saint Paul speaks of the greatness, the dignity and the duty of the Christian priest. He is a minister of Christ and the instrument of Christ. The priest is “another Christ.” A priest is appointed steward of the mysteries of God for the benefit of the mystical body of Christ. Pope Pius XI writes the following regarding the office of the priesthood: “The Christian, at almost every important state of his mortal career, finds as his side the priest with power received from God, for the purpose of communicating or increasing that grace which is the supernatural life of his soul.”

It is natural to fear death, but we really should not. In fact, it is not at all a morbid desire to long for death with one’s whole heart and soul! Actually we should rejoice at death because death means that we are finally delivered from this present “valley of tears” and all our earthly suffering! Death delivers us from our actual sins and through death we are given the chance to enter into the heavenly Paradise for which we were born!

What is death? Job says that our life is full of miseries, infirmities, crosses, persecutions and fears. This is not a life for rest and enjoyment, but for labor and suffering! The only way we can merit heaven is by toil, labor and pain. It is true that death is the punishment of sin, but the miseries this life offers are so great that death should seem to be a relief rather than a punishment.

If we are prepared to die, death is welcomed. In our earthly life the world, evil spirits, the flesh and the passions all draw the soul to sin and eternal death. But death brings us to the possession of Jesus Christ, our true life!

Jesus Christ has said that we should never perform our actions in order that we may be praised by men. If we seek a reward in heaven, then we must strive to hide our good works as much as possible. If not, the devil may very well rob us of our merit through pride. Many do good works that are not founded in the soul. In other words, their religion is strictly exterior.

The saints knew their religion well and always sought to humble themselves in order to obtain the mercy of God. Many Christians practice their religion based on their mood. Some do it routinely out of habit alone. Many people pray much and frequently receive the Sacraments, but they still keep their bad habits and secret vices. They want to be both friends of God and friends of sin.

False virtue is a great sin. We must always have a pure intention when we undertake good works. It is not the size and greatness of the act which gives them merit, but rather our intention to please God and God alone.

The Church teaches that the Blessed Virgin Mary is the Mother of all Christians. She is an example we should all follow. If we become identified with Mary and imitate her virtues, we will be able to bring Christ to life, through grace, in the souls of others. From the dogmatic constitution on the Church of the Second Vatican Council:

Mary, because she has entered intimately into the history of salvation, in a certain sense gathers up in her own person the great truths of the faith and awakens their resonance when she is the object of preaching and veneration; she summons the faithful to her Son, to His sacrifice and to the Father’s love. In seeking to further the glory of Christ, the Church becomes more and more like Mary, its exalted type, as it continues its progress in faith, hope and charity, seeking and fulfilling the divine will in all things.

So also in its apostolic task the Church rightly looks to the one who bore Christ, Christ who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin in order that He might also be born and grow in the hearts of the faithful. In her whole life this virgin mother showed herself as an example of that motherly love that must animate all who share in the apostolic mission of the Church for the regeneration of mankind. (Lumen gentium, nn. 63-65)

Saint Cyril of Alexandria writes: “Mary, Mother of God, we salute you. Precious vessel, worthy of the whole world’s reverence, you are an ever shining light, the crown of virginity, the symbol of orthodoxy, and indestructible temple, the place that held Him whom no place can contain, mother and virgin. Because of you the holy gospels could say: Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.”
