St. Thomas Aquinas teaches us that “man can never love God as much as He should be loved; neither can he believe and hope in Him as much as he ought.” Our hope and our confidence in God can never be excessive or exaggerated. If we really try to do everything we can to please God, we should not fear that our hope in Him can be too great. God wills good for us! God wills our sanctification! The more we hope in Him, the more He grants us favors! St. Thomas says: “The more the soul hopes, the more it attains.” St. Therese of the Child Jesus says: “We can never have too much confidence in the good God who is so powerful and so merciful. We obtain from Him as much as we hope for!”
The more weak and powerless we find ourselves, the more we should hope in God. Remember God loves “to exalt the humble and to fill the hungry with good things.” Lk. 1: 52.53. God's mercy is waiting to come to us. He wants to purify us and sanctify us. Open your heart to Him!

God is all powerful because He can do all that He wills; and He can do as He wills, when He wills, without any limitations! Nothing can impede His action, nor oppose His will; nothing is difficult for Him! God's works, even the greatest, are performed in one instant by as simple act of His will. God is so omnipotent that with a single word He has brought all things into existence out of nothing. God's word is omnipotent, creative, operative, and effective, so that it infallibly produces whatever it expresses. God is so omnipotent that He can change men, the children of sin, into His adopted sons, called to share in His own divine life! He can even draw good from evil! God is infinite goodness! Let us worship Him!

...And Jesus saith to Simon: Fear not, from henceforth thou shalt catch men...We must be completely convinced of our own weakness and inability before Our Lord will permit us to have any success. God will only come to our aid when we are aware of our willingness to openly admit our poverty. God wants us to have a great faith in Him. We must never trust in our own strength, but rather we must always have complete confidence in Almighty God!
“O Lord, you are my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?” If a battle should rise up against me, in this will I be confident...You protect me in the secret place of Your tabernacle...As soon as God sees us totally convinced of our nothingness, He comes to our aid! All we have to do is humble ourselves and admit all our imperfections...This is the key to holiness!
“Abide in Me and I in you,” says Jesus (Jn 15:4). Then Jesus instituted the Eucharist for the purpose of nourishing our life of union with Him! Each time we approach the Holy Eucharist, Jesus rekindles in us the fire of His love! When we are united to Him we can accomplish anything! Without Him, we can do nothing!

“I will send you another Comforter,” another deliverer, “The Holy Ghost,” says Jesus Christ. This Holy Ghost rules over the Holy Church and enters into every soul to enlighten and guide them in the way of salvation!
The problem is that not every man who has received the Holy Ghost chooses to cooperate with the promptings of His grace. Not all of us are children of the Holy Ghost. Many of us are children of the world.
We know we are a child of the Holy Ghost if we avoid grievous sin. The Holy Ghost can only dwell in a soul who has no part of serious sin. Every sin is an abomination to the Holy Ghost. Saint Paul writes: “Grieve not the Holy Spirit of God.” In other words, do not sin! Sin turns the dwelling place of the Holy Ghost into the dwelling place of Satan! Saint Gregory says: “The sinner's heart is the devil's workshop, but not the dwelling of the Holy Ghost.” It is most notably the sins of impurity-unchaste thoughts, words, and actions which drive the Holy Ghost out of our hearts. The sensual man cannot receive the grace of the Holy Ghost. The book of Genesis tells us: “My spirit shall not remain in man forever, because he is flesh.” In other words, because he is addicted to the lust of the flesh.
If you have lost the Holy Ghost through leading a sinful life now is the time to repent! You must do penance to purify your soul and receive the Holy Ghost once again into your heart. Saint Peter says: “Do penance, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of your sins and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost!"

Stations of the Cross will be prayed after Mass on Fridays during Lent.
On each of the Fridays of Lent, a plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful who, after Communion, recite the “Prayer Before a Crucifix.”
The next potluck will be on Divine Mercy Sunday-April 12th.
St. John teaches that sin is the death of the soul and sanctifying grace is life. To attain eternal life we must do penance for our sins. John the Baptist preached penance in the wilderness. Even if by God's grace we have recognized our sins and made a good confession, there still remains an obligation to make satisfaction to God for the offenses we committed against Him by sinning.
Always carry out the penance imposed upon you by your confessor. Try to do much more than he assigns. We must pray, fast, give alms and make use of our indulgences. We must do our penance as soon as possible.
It is a sin to neglect carrying out our penance! If we feel indifferent to doing penance, pray! Consider the Passion of Jesus Christ and all He has merited for us!

Throughout a weekend of prayer, discussion and group interaction, men begin to better understand God's movement in their life. Exploring priesthood weekends are held at Mundelein Seminary.

Praying constantly is a necessity if we want to save our souls! We must pray that God gives us light to see! In the fourth luminous mystery of the Holy Rosary we pray that we are able to see with the transforming vision of God and not our own, limited human vision. We must beg God to see the path we must walk in order to save our souls! Satan is constantly trying to deceive us.
We cannot live in a state of sin and slave of the devil and expect to attain eternal salvation. We cannot delude ourselves into thinking we have plenty of time to give ourselves to God. God does not count our years, but rather the sins of each individual. God has fixed for each of us the number of sins He will pardon, but the Day of Judgemt will come soon!
We always will be given the grace to resist temptation if we sincerely ask for it, however, satan would have us believe otherwise. Saint Paul says that God is faithful, and that He never permits us to be tempted above our strength. The more we yield to temptation, the weaker we become. When we have recourse to God He will always give us the strength necessary to resist temptation!

Most people who suffer ask the question: “What have I done to God that He should send me so much misery?” The answer is that God sends you the affliction because of your sins. Consider all the commandments. Which one have we not broken? Are all the bad habits we have acquired for so long a time ignored? What about our pride? What about our vanity, self-love, quick tempers, jealousy? How about the ways we have neglected the Blessed Sacrament? What penance have we done to atone for our sins? What good works have we done? After having committed so many sins why have we shed so few tears? God chastises only to heal the wounds which we as sinners have inflicted upon our own souls! God sends us suffering only to crown us with eternal glory. Consider the story of Job…”If we have received good things from God, should we not also accept evil?”

A good confession will always drive the devil from our hearts. However, we must constantly watch that we do not commit the same sins over and over. The Lenten season is penitential in nature to remind us how to guard against repeated offenses. We do penance for two reasons: first, to give satisfaction to God for our sins; and, second, to keep us from committing the same sins again. We must suffer either in this life or in the next to atone for our sins. In early Church times, penances were much harsher than what we experience today. We should always strive to do much more that what the priest imposes upon us during our confession because our penances do not begin to compare with the gravity of our sins. We should also make use of indulgences whenever possible. An indulgence will alleviate or grant complete remission of penances incurred by the sinner. A plenary indulgence is granted on each Friday of Lent to the faithful who, after Communion, recite the “Prayer Before a Crucifix.”

God has called us to a divine sonship. We are debtors to Christ because He has redeemed us with His blood and so made us God’s adopted sons. As such, we are led by the Spirit of God. We must therefore live our lives with courage and conviction! The Spirit of God is not a weak Spirit, but rather one of strength, power, and wisdom! We too should live our lives embracing this power, wisdom, and strength.
As God’s adopted sons, we must live our lives as children of the light. We must not be outdone by the children of this world in zeal. We must learn to take sanctity by force. Saint Paul says this involves not living according to the flesh, lest we die. Instead, we live by the Spirit and mortify the deeds of the flesh in order to live!
As Christians, we must profess our belief in Christ by the witness of our lives. We live in the midst of a culture of death and darkness. We should never be outdone in zeal when it comes to bringing the light of Christ to the world.

We want to invite all area pro-life Catholics to join Life Runners, and to join in our upcoming events, including:
• A Fun Run/Walk at Sequiota Park at 8am on March 3 – bring cans of food to help Saint Vincent de Paul and feed the poor.
• Fun Run/Walk at Phelps Grove Park at 8am on April 21 with National Life Runners director Dr. Patrick Castle.
• Walk and Time of Prayers and Witness at Cowden Park across from Planned Parenthood on May 12 from 10am-Noon.

Saint Paul reminds us that if we want to please God our Father, we must learn from His Son Jesus Christ. We must learn the details of His life. We must adopt his attitudes. We must contemplate His life. If we truly love Jesus Christ we will sincerely want to know all about His life and character so that we can become more like Him.
There is absolutely no quicker way to conform ourselves to the person of Jesus Christ than by meditating upon the mysteries of His life. We do this when we pray the Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Saint Louis Marie de Montfort writes that: “All our perfection consists in being conformed, united and consecrated to Jesus Christ; and therefore the most perfect of all devotions is, without any doubt, that which the most perfectly conforms, unites and consecrates us to Jesus Christ. Now Mary, being the most conformed of all creatures to Jesus Christ, it follows that of all devotions, that which most consecrates and conforms the soul to our Lord is devotion to His Holy Mother; that the more a soul is consecrated to Mary, the more it is consecrated to Jesus Christ.”
My prayer is that more souls devote themselves to praying the Holy Rosary each day. Let us be slaves of Jesus Christ in Mary.

Sunday, March 4th at 3:00pm is the Rite of Election at Saint Agnes Cathedral. There will be no Latin Mass.
There will be no Latin Mass on Friday, March 2nd at 12:15pm.
Christ our Lord allowed Himself to be tempted in order to give us an example and to instruct us. The Catholic Church teaches us that there are three levels of temptation. The first level is that of suggestion, or external temptation. This is the only way that Christ could be tempted since He was perfect. We can all undergo external temptation without committing any sin. The second level of temptation is that temptation in which we take delight. Although we may not give clear consent, this level of temptation becomes internal and thus becomes sinful. Finally, there is temptation to which we consent. This form of temptation is always sinful because it affects the deepest part of our soul. Christ allowed himself to be externally tempted in order to show us how to fight and conquer our own temptations. We must learn to trust in God and turn to prayer when we are tempted.
Nobody is above temptation. All the great saints were tempted. We must prepare ourselves for temptation by prayer and fasting just as Jesus did. This is why the Church gives us the beautiful season of Lent. Jesus’ withdrawal into the desert invites us to prepare ourselves by prayer and penance to battle temptation, but also teaches us how to prepare before making any significant decision or action.

Sunday, March 4th at 3:00pm is the Rite of Election at Saint Agnes Cathedral. There will be no Latin Mass.
There will be no Latin Mass on Friday, March 2nd at 12:15pm.
Christ our Lord allowed Himself to be tempted in order to give us an example and to instruct us. The Catholic Church teaches us that there are three levels of temptation. The first level is that of suggestion, or external temptation. This is the only way that Christ could be tempted since He was perfect. We can all undergo external temptation without committing any sin. The second level of temptation is that temptation in which we take delight. Although we may not give clear consent, this level of temptation becomes internal and thus becomes sinful. Finally, there is temptation to which we consent. This form of temptation is always sinful because it affects the deepest part of our soul. Christ allowed himself to be externally tempted in order to show us how to fight and conquer our own temptations. We must learn to trust in God and turn to prayer when we are tempted.
Nobody is above temptation. All the great saints were tempted. We must prepare ourselves for temptation by prayer and fasting just as Jesus did. This is why the Church gives us the beautiful season of Lent. Jesus’ withdrawal into the desert invites us to prepare ourselves by prayer and penance to battle temptation, but also teaches us how to prepare before making any significant decision or action.

And he came into the hill country about the Jordan, preaching the baptism of penance for the remission of sins, as it was written in the book of the sayings of Isaias the Prophet: A voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare ye the way of the Lord…”
Advent is a time of preparation and penance. We anticipate Christ’s birth, but we also prepare for His coming as Judge. John the Baptist was an outstanding example of austerity. He perfectly prepared the way of Christ and recognized his role in doing so. When Christ comes in judgment the world as we know it will change.
Saint Paul says “the form of this world is passing away,” but he does not say that this world will be annihilated at the end of time. Rather he implies that all creation will be renewed, for he writes that “the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God…because creation itself will be set free from its bondage to death and obtain the glorious liberty of the children of God” (Rom 8.19,21).
In the Book of Revelations we read:
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, the New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband, and I heard a great voice from the throne saying, “Behold the dwelling of God is with men. He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be with them. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain any more, for the former things have passed away.” Advent is therefore also a time of joy! Let us live this joy during this holy season.

May 1, 2011, Divine Mercy Sunday; A plenary indulgence is granted to those who take part in the prayers and devotions held in honor of Divine Mercy, or who, in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament exposed or in the tabernacle, recite one Our Father and the Creed, adding a devout prayer to the merciful Lord Jesus. Those who for a just cause cannot get to church can gain the same indulgence by reciting one Our Father, the Creed, and a devout prayer to the merciful Lord Jesus before an image of the Divine Mercy.
Immediately following Mass on May 1st the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed and we will join together in reciting the Divine Mercy Chaplet with benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.
The Church has always understood and has defined that Jesus Christ in today's Gospel conferred on the Apostles authority to forgive sins. This power is exercised in the Sacrament of Penance. The Sacrament of Penance is the most sublime expression of God's love and mercy towards men. The Lord is always waiting for us to repent. He will always forgive us and restore to us our dignity.
The Popes have consistently recommended Christians to have regular recourse to the Sacrament of Penance. Penance helps us to grow in a true knowledge of ourselves and in Christian humility. We root out bad habits and keep from neglecting our spiritual life through penance. Our conscience is strengthened and purified through the Sacrament of Penance.

Saint Paul reminds us that we are temples of the Holy Spirit and members of Christ’s body. We therefore have a grave responsibility to resist immoral practices in all forms.
Saint Paul in fact warns us that “immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you.” We must practice chastity out of love for God and respect for one’s own body.
Along with chastity comes both modesty and refinement. We must keep guard over our senses and our heart. We must avoid the occasions to sin. We must strive to frequent the sacraments, particularly the sacrament of Confession. We must foster devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. All these help us to live a holy life.
Saint Paul also reminds us of the importance of fighting against greed. We cannot become attached to things of this world. We must first seek the Kingdom of God. When we do this we soon realize our obligation to be lights for Christ. We realize our obligation to help those around us. The salvation of souls is at stake. If we want to be faithful Christians we do all we can to bring others to Christ, especially by the witness of our lives.

Note that Saint Agnes Cathedral has scheduled a Mass for Ash Wednesday at the regularly scheduled Mass time for the Latin Mass (12:15pm). I will be in Mansfield and Mountain Grove for Ash Wednesday Masses; therefore there will be no Latin Mass on Ash Wednesday.
Laws of Abstinence:
-Complete abstinence is defined as abstaining from meat and soup or gravy made from meat.
-Partial abstinence is defined as allowing meat and soup or gravy made from meat, only once a day at the principal meal.
-Abstinence applies to all those over seven years.
Laws of Fast:
-On days of Fast, only one full meal is allowed, two other meatless meals are allowed in addition to the principal meal but the total quantity of food for these two small repasts should not equal the amount taken at a full meal.
-Partial abstinence is required on all days of Fast, except on days of COMPLETE abstinence.
-Eating between meals in not permitted though liquids may be taken.
-Days of Fast apply to all those over 21 and under 59 years of age.
-Laws of fasting and abstinence are not binding on those with medical conditions or those whose ability to work would be impaired.
-There is no obligation for fast or abstinence on a Holy Day of Obligation even though it may fall on a Friday.
In the new Code of Canon Law, USCCB usage, fasting and complete abstinence are limited to Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Complete abstinence is obligatory on all Fridays of Lent. Abstinence applies to those over the age of 14. Fasting is obligatory for those between the ages of 18 and 59, inclusive.
Saint Paul emphasizes the fact that the virtue of charity is so important that without it all other gifts make no sense. Charity towards our neighbor is an expression of our love for God Himself. Love is enduring. Love will never fade away. This is why charity is greater than all God’s other gifts to man. Saint Paul is constantly reminding us to actively pursue the virtue of charity. All the saints teach us the very same message.
Faith, hope and charity are the most important virtues in the Christian life. These are called the “theological” virtues. God infuses them into our hearts together with sanctifying grace. Charity is superior to both faith and hope because charity is the virtue that most directly unites one to good. In the words of Saint Thomas Aquinas: “Faith and hope attain God in so far as we derive from Him the knowledge of truth or the acquisition of good; whereas charity attains God Himself that it may rest in Him, not that something else should come to us from Him (Summa theologiae, II-II, q. 23, a. 6).

The nature of the Christian’s life must involve a certain “interior” striving. We should really approach our spiritual life with a competitive spirit. We should also learn to guard our spirituality with a certain jealousy. In other words, we should foster a healthy striving toward becoming the saints that Christ is asking us to become. We must learn to face all sacrifices that our Lord asks of us head-on. As followers of Christ we cannot allow any obstacles, failures, limitations or temptations of any sort to discourage us. It should come as no surprise when we discover that pride, envy, jealousy, laziness, hatred and all other sins rise up from the depths of our own hearts. Listen to the words of Saint Paul: “I do not run aimlessly, I do not box as one beating the air, but I pommel my body and subdue it, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.” The point is we cannot become depressed by our failures, even if they are serious. We must have recourse to Christ is the Sacrament of Penance and begin again with a desire to improve. Christ understands our weakness and constantly calls us to Himself.
Saint Paul emphasizes the importance of perseverance. He points out the importance of the ascetical effort we have a responsibility to embrace. We must physically mortify our bodies to gain self-control of our sinful nature. As we begin today to prepare for the Lenten season, we must ask our Lord for the grace to deny ourselves. In this way we learn to bring Christ’s good work He has begun in us to perfection.

The Third Sunday of Advent is called Gaudete Sunday. Gaudete comes from the Latin verb gaudere (to rejoice). It is an imperative plural form of the verb. In other words, we are commanded to rejoice! As we anticipate the greatest event in the whole history of the world, namely the Incarnation, we are to do so with great joy! We also look to the joy that is yet to come. As we continue with the penitential nature of the Advent season, Gaudete Sunday gives us a brief rest as we focus on our hope Christ offers at His coming into the world.
Advent is about not only the Incarnation, but Christ’s second coming as well. Unfortunately, for many that day will be a day of terror. Christ is coming to judge and He will do so without mercy. This is what we are anticipating with our penance. We want to be prepared and make Christ’s second coming a day of joyful anticipation rather than one of fear. All will bend their knees at the second coming of Christ. Many who knowingly reject Christ will do so in terror. But this is not what God wants for us.
Let us rejoice today at the wonderful works God has wrought for us in the person of His Son! Let us look forward with joyful hope to Christ’s coming in glory at the end of time! Maranatha! Come Lord Jesus!

All will bend their knees at the second coming of Christ. Many who knowingly reject Christ will do so in terror. But this is not what God wants for us.
Let us rejoice today at the wonderful works God has wrought for us in the person of His Son! Let us look forward with joyful hope to Christ’s coming in glory at the end of time! Maranatha! Come Lord Jesus!
